Safe Scavengers Sankalp
A Step Towards Safety, Dignity, and Systemic Change for Sanitation Workers.
The Challenge
Launched in April 2025, the "Safe Scavengers Sankalp" initiative confronts the harsh realities faced by manual scavengers and sanitation workers. These essential members of our society often work in perilous conditions without adequate protection, facing health risks and social stigma.
Our Approach
With a dedicated team of 30 volunteers, we began by deeply engaging with the community. Our process involves listening to their experiences, learning about their daily struggles, and actively creating awareness among all stakeholders about the risks and systemic challenges inherent in this critical work.

What We Found: Insights from the Field
A survey conducted with 40 manual scavengers provided critical insights:
Demographics
Participants ranged from early 20s to over 50, offering a diverse perspective on the issues.
Nature of Work
82.5% involved in general drain cleaning; others clean septic tanks and engage in manual scavenging.
Experience
Significant experience: 32.5% with over 10 years, and another 32.5% with 6-10 years.
Safety Equipment
Basic tools like buckets, shovels, gloves, and masks are used, but essential safety gear like boots and protective clothing is mostly unavailable.
Challenges Faced
Lack of safety gear, low/irregular wages, social stigma, poor working conditions, and no healthcare support are urgent issues.
What They Need
- Quality safety equipment
- Regular health checkups
- Skill development for alternative jobs
- Legal support and advocacy
- Better access to government welfare schemes
Our Next Steps
- Creating impactful awareness campaigns for safety and dignity.
- Engaging with local authorities and communities for systemic support.
- Facilitating access to safety gear, health checkups, and welfare schemes.
- Exploring skill development programs for safer, sustainable livelihoods.
